The post-launch content ofCall of Duty: Black Ops 6is now well underway, with the title recently launching its first in-game season and bringing a lot of changes to its core multiplayer,Warzone, and Zombies experiences. As things stand, the title’s multiplayer has received the most attention, with new maps and weapons already released, but Treyarch has confirmed that some massive additions to Zombies are set to come in the near future around the mid-season mark of season one.
The most exciting of these upcoming Zombies changes forCall of Duty: Black Ops 6is the introduction of a brand-new map; Citadelle des Morts is expected to launch around mid-December. While little is currently known about the map other than its major setting, fans have already drawn comparisons between Citadelle des Morts and past maps likeBlack Ops 3’s Der Eisendrache, and the upcoming experience has the chance to take this past inspiration a step further. Many of the Wonder Weapons that have been introduced toCoDsince the start of the Dark Aether storyline have been experimental modern weapons, and Citadelle des Morts has the perfect opportunity to instead hark back to the more medieval and fantastical Wonder Weapons of past games.
Citadelle des Morts' Setting Should Inspire the Wonder Weapon of Black Ops 6’s Upcoming Zombies Map
Wonder Weapons have been at the forefront of theCall of DutyZombies experience ever since the inception of the mode, with2008’sCall of Duty:World at Warintroducing the iconic Ray Gun as well as the Wunderwaffe DG-2. These weapons are renowned for their rarity and immense power; theCoDfranchise went on to include a massive range of different Wonder Weapons through the many Zombies iterations that have been released over the years.
Many of these weapons are highly scientific and experimental in nature, being designed with the sole purpose of killing zombies, but there is only so much variety that these kinds of weapons can pull from their scientific origins in terms of how they look and feel.CoDZombies underwent some big changes with the launch of 2020’sCold War, with this title introducing the Dark Aether storyline to the mode, as well asthe divisive open-world gameplay of Outbreak Zombies.
The franchise has received seven brand-new Wonder Weapons since this Dark Aether story began inCold War, the vast majority of which are experimental weapons with a deeply technological feel to them. While there are some exceptions to this, such asCold War’s Chrysalax Wonder Weapon,Black Ops 6has also followed the wider design pattern with its own debut Wonder Weapon, the DRI-11 Beamsmasher.
Black Ops 6’s Citadelle des Morts is the Perfect Fit For More Ancient Wonder Weapons
Some of the most memorable Wonder Weapons inCoDZombies history instead come from more ancient and fantasy-based inspirations;Black Ops 2andBlack Ops 3used this to great effect. For example,Black Ops 2’s Origins map included four Elemental Staffsimbued with mystical powers as its Wonder Weapons, andBlack Ops 3’s Der Eisendrache took a similar approach with four Elemental Bows known as the Wrath of the Ancients.
A lot of the earlycomparisons between Der Eisendrache and the upcoming Citadelle des Morts mapcome from the shared castle settings of both experiences, and Citadelle could easily use this to fuel its own medieval-based Wonder Weapons that could replicate the acclaim of the past Staffs and Bows. The Wonder Weapon framework could easily apply to things like Maces, Swords, and Shields while perfectly fitting the setting of Citadelle des Morts, with the mystical power of the Dark Aether being a great justification for the might that these weapons would have. While experimental Wonder Weapons have created some of the most iconic Zombies weapons over the years, Citadelle des Morts can hark back to the past and break this trend with some iconic medieval weapons of its own.
