Who is Yami Sukehiro?
Outcasted from his homeland, Yami faced discrimination and cultural shock in the Clover Kingdom
Yami Sukehiro, or Captain Yami of the Black Bulls, is a descendant of the Yami Clan and hails from the distant land of Hino Country, or the Land of the Sun. Since he was younger, CaptainYami has been a force to be reckoned with, as the Yami Clan had previously been a family of assassins known as the Kijin under the leadership of the Ryudo Family.
Captain Yami’s latent power had yet to be displayed as Yami was still undergoing training with his father. However, Yami’s father was insistent on reviving the past fame of the Clan and was keen to ensure Yami inherited the title of the Clan’s strongest Kijin. However, Yami had never been interested in their Clan’s history or restoring their Clan name.
Unfortunately, tragedy struck when their father forced Captain Yami’s younger sister Ichika to take the Clan’s secret drug called the Oni Soul Pill. Ichika’s latent powers then went berserk, and she lost her mind, leading to the death of the entire Clan. Captain Yami then took on the burden of being the murderer of the Clan and also killed their father. Afterward, he isshipwrecked in the Clover Kingdom, where he encountersJulius Novachronoand is invited to join the Magic Knights.
In the Land of the Sun, Captain Yami learned how to use Ki, the vitality and energy flow within people’s bodies. However, after two years within the Clover Kingdom, Yami obtained a Grimoire in which he could use Dark Magic spells; from here on out, Yami continuously surpassed his limits and encouraged others to do so.

As mentioned above,Captain Yami can use Dark Magic, a rare magic attribute that both he and his younger sister can use, likely due to their heritage as descendants of the Yami Clan. Captain Yami’s Dark magic allows him to manipulate the element of darkness, which he primarily manifests through his katana.
As a result of Captain Yami’s rare magic attribute and his progress in becoming theCaptain of the Black Bulls, Yami is thus ranked as anArcane Stage Magethrough the Heart Kingdom’s magical power ranking. Yami is somewhat eccentric, choosing to lazy around or take long dumps on the toilet. However, when it comes to battle, Yami always surpasses his limits and formulates new techniques to defeat his enemies.
With each battle Captain Yami participates in, he faces off against his enemies using his Ki, natural power, and mana. While many other characters likeAsta needed strenuous training, Captain Yami’s abilities evolved during his battles as he formulated new strategies to take on his enemy’s weaknesses. Yami is also motivated to surpass his current ability if the members of the Black Bull are in danger; through this, Yami can unlock new spells in his Grimoire.

AlthoughCaptain Yami is exceptionally powerful, his weakness is that Dark Magic is slow, so he battles with a Katana, embedding Dark Magic into the blade and using Reinforcement magic to increase his abilities. This shows that Yami is aware of his weaknesses and where he needs to improve as a mage, which is why he developed this fighting style to take on his opponents. Each time Captain Yami faces an opponent far stronger than himself, he encourages not only him but others to surpass their limit and effectively defeat the opponent in front of them.

Captain Yami has faced numerous opponents who could match his power or defeat him. He has repeatedly overcome these battles by unlocking new techniques to defeat his opponents. However, Yami has always been a mage from the Land of the Sun and has yet to fully develop his Ki in the same way Ichika has.
As he hails from the Yami Clan, the family has also been known to harbor a secret drug called the Oni Soul Pill. This pill will increase the user’s latent magic power, physical abilities, and healing power, provided the user is able to stay sane.
In Chapter 374, Captain Yami consumes this pill, which Ichika has given her under the guidance of the Shogun, Ryudo Ryuya. After taking the drug, Yami awakens his latent magic power from the Yami Clan, significantly increasing his abilities. As such, he could defeat a clone of Lucius with a single slash.
Overall, Captain Yami has consistently been surpassing his limits. Although he might not look it, he is a strategist who can understand his weaknesses and move past them to defeat an opponent more powerful than him. Although, unlike many of the younger characters, Yami does not need extra training, and his laziness is likely holding him back from his true potential, which is why he is able to overcome his battles and discover new techniques. While this is not shocking, as many characters can do the same, Captain Yami is certainly impressed with himself each time he can unlock anew spell in his Grimoire.
