Summary
Batman: The Brave and the Boldis one of the most anticipated DCU projects. However, DC Studios boss James Gunn explained why he’s not going to rush The Dark Knight’s introduction to the DCU.
Batman: The Brave and the Boldwas one of the first movies announced whenGunn unveiled his initial slate of DC projects. However, unlikeSupermanandSupergirl: Woman of Tomorrow(which were announced at the same time),Batman: The Brave and the Boldhasn’t moved beyond hiringThe Flashdirector Andy Muschietti to helm the film. It’s not the only project without significant progress, asSwamp ThingandThe Authorityalso haven’t received any updates in a while. However, considering Batman’s importance, fans have wondered why the Caped Crusader’s DCU debut is taking so long.
During an interview withCollider, Gunn explained thatBatman: The Brave and the Boldwon’t move forward until there’s a script he’s happy with. The DC Studios boss echoed his previous comments clarifying thatsome DCU projects may not be madeif there’s not a script that satisfies him. DCU projects won’t be put into production just because they were announced. It will all come down to the script.
There’s no set timeline for anything. The one thing that I’ve tried to make clear to people from the beginning, in the way that I hope we’re different, is that everything in DC is going to be based on the writers.Until we have a screenplay that I’m totally happy with, that movie is not going to get made, no matter what it is. So, we have been really fortunate with some screenplays. You know, ‘Supergirl’ came in and just, wow Ana [Nogueria] did such an amazing job, the ‘Lanterns’ pilot came in, and now the whole ‘Lanterns’ series came in, and it’s like ‘Wow that’s wonderful, wonderful work.’ And there’s a couple of other things that people don’t know about, a couple of movies and TV shows that are greenlit or near greenlit. But it’s going to be based always on that, on the story, because at the end of the day if we’re happy with the story that we’re telling, that’s what matters most. Andonce ‘The Brave and the Bold’ gets to that point, then we’ll make the movie.
It’s hard to imagine a DC Universe with Batman in it sooner or later. Still, there won’t be a lack of Batman content. Matt Reeves’The Batman Part 2will continue the Crime Saga that launched with the first installment and continued with the HBO seriesThe Penguin. This gritty and grounded take on the Caped Crusader is separate from Gunn’s developing DCU continuity. Still, many fans want to see Gunn’s take on the character, with somehoping the DCU Batman embraces the fantastical elementsfrom the comics.
Christopher Nolan’sThe Dark Knighttrilogywas the first live-action Batman film series to explore a ‘realistic version’ of the Caped Crusader. Reeves’The Batmantook that concept further by arguably eschewing even more ‘comic book’ elements. These were understandable decisions considering how far the franchise fell following Joel Schumancher’s campyBatman & Robin. However, many fans are growing weary of the ‘grounded’ Batman stories and want Gunn to dive into otherworldly plots involving characters like Mr. Freeze, Man-Bat, or Clayface.
Fans must seemingly wait a while to see what Gunn has planned for the DCU’s Batman. That may be for the best, as superhero movies aren’t exactly performing as well as they used to (with exceptions likeDeadpool and Wolverineor theSpider-Versemovies). The writing is often cited as a reason for ‘superhero fatigue,’ so Gunn is making the right call by ensuring no DCU project moves forward until they have a script that works.
