Summary

When players think ofAvowed, the upcoming RPG by Obsidian Entertainment, the immersive first-person perspective likely comes to mind. Drawing comparisons to the likes of theElder Scrollsseries, namelySkyrim,Avowed’s trailersand early previews have highlighted its rich world, though only through a first-person lens. However, while the thought of stepping intoAvowed’s world of Eora with an up-close-and-personal point of view sounds exciting, the game’s optional third-person mode deserves some attention as well.

There are plenty of benefits that come from playing a game from a first-person perspective, and the same will likely be true ofAvowed. Even so,Avowed’s third-person mode also offers unique benefits that can significantly enhance the overall experience. While it will ultimately come down to player preference,Avowed’s third-person mode shouldn’t be slept on regardless.

Avowed Players Shouldn’t Forget About Third-Person Mode

Third-Person in Avowed Will Allow Players to View Their Character

One of the more obvious reasons players might prefer to playAvowedin its third-person mode is to be able to view their character in real-time. There are far too many exclusively first-person games out there that have character customization options and yet the outcome of any customization players apply to their character can only be viewed from the inventory screen or during cinematics. InAvowed, however, since players can swap to a third-person perspective at any time, they can view their character’s gear, cosmetics, and the character model they might have spent a great deal of time designing withAvowed’s character creator.

The presence of a third-person mode inAvowedautomatically encourages players to spend more time personalizing their character, so it would only make sense for players to use the mode often.

Third-Person in Avowed Could Positively Impact Traversal and Exploration

One massive downside ofAvowed’s third-person mode is that it would potentially decrease immersion, at least for those who find playing in first-person the most immersive way to play. However, this potential decrease in immersion would be exchanged for a much wider view of the surrounding area, thereby positively impacting exploration. Of course, third-person mode will likely make it more difficult to see the more intimate environmental details ofAvowed’s world, but it would simultaneously increase players' spatial awareness.

It’s highly probable thatAvowed’s third-person modewould also enhance platforming and navigation, especially in tighter areas or when players need to change their position in the middle of combat. If there is a large gap players are required to leap across, or another method of traversal that can’t be seen well from a first-person perspective, thenAvowed’s third-person mode would be the solution. Then, there’s always motion sickness to consider, for those who might be prone to it when playing a game in first-person.

Third-Person in Avowed Could Change Combat for Some Players

Finally, playingAvowedin third-person could enhance players' experience with the game’s combat, especially after games likeDragon Age: The Veilguardmade third-person combatlook and feel so satisfying. Generally speaking, third-person combat can feel more strategic and tactical than first-person combat is capable of, as it allows players to better gauge their surroundings and the positions of enemies. Here, however, some combat situations might warrant a first-person perspective, while others might benefit more from players using third-person mode.

All in all, players shouldn’t sleep onAvowed’s third-person mode, as it may be able to get them to places that a first-person perspective wouldn’t be able to. With it giving players the ability to see their character in real-time, potentially enhancing traversal and exploration, and adding a little more strategy toAvowed’s combat, the game’s third-person mode might be the way to go. At the very least, players should consider swapping back and forth between first and third-person, depending on what the situation calls for.
