CD Projekt Red’s sci-fi RPGCyberpunk 2077had a rocky road after its initial launch in 2020, but one element that helped regain faith in the project was its excellent anime adaptation,Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. The series was set in the game’s world of Night City, following a street kid named David Martinez who becomes a black-market mercenary known as an edgerunner.Cyberpunk: Edgerunnersreceived a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes and was beloved by fans, bringing a new level of interest toCyberpunk 2077.
CD Projekt Red Confirms Second Cyberpunk 2077 Animation
While the future ofCyberpunk: Edgerunnersmay be uncertain, the outlook forCyberpunk 2077on-screen is looking bright. CD Projekt Red’s Chief Financial Officer, Piotr Nielubowicz, announced at the company’s recent quarterly earnings results meeting (via VGC) that the company is working on another animation project with Netflix, set in theCyberpunk 2077universe.
I’m also very happy to announce that we’re working on another animation project set in the Cyberpunk universe, which will be released on Netflix.
Nielubowicz did not provide any further details on the animated project, but the company previously saidCyberpunk: Edgerunnerswas intended to be a standalone projectwith Studio Trigger, suggesting that this may not necessarily be another season of the beloved anime. Netflix had hinted at anotherCyberpunk 2077collaboration during Geeked Week earlier this year, saying simply“Return to Night City”,but provided no further details on the story or any of the creatives involved. It seems like the new animation project that Nielubowicz discussed could be what the Netflix teaser was hinting at.Cyberpunk: Edgerunnersspent four weeks in Netflix’s Global Top 10 charts upon release andhelped boost sales ofCyberpunk 2077to over 20 million copies. It’s no surprise that CD Projekt Red would want to continue riding this wave by investing in new animated projects that will maintain the audience’s interest while the company works on a sequel to the game.
A Cyberpunk 2077 Live-Action Project Is Also In Development
CD Projekt Red also provided an update on thelive-action adaptation ofCyberpunk 2077that was announced in 2023. During the most recent earnings report (via GameSpot), CD Projekt Red revealed the live-actionCyberpunk 2077adaptation is still in development but has seen progression in the past 12 months and could be shopped to potential studios within the next year. Based on this, the live-action adaptation is still a few years away from release.
