The end of 1999 was a stressful time as people were genuinely terrified about the future, andan upcominghorrorcomedy is spoofing that time period. TheA24 horror movieY2Khas a new trailerand is coming to theaters soon.

As reported byJoBlo,Y2Kis Kyle Mooney’s first movie as director, and he is known for his years onSaturday Night Live. Jonah Hill is a producer, and Mooney also stars in the film. The movie’s cast includesScream (2022)andScream 6actor Mason Gooding, Rachel Zegler, Jaeden Martell, Alicia Silverstone, The Kid Laroi, Fred Durst, and Tim Heidecker.

From the trailer, horror fans can see and hear familiar and nostalgic AOL dial-up, followed by a news report by then President Bill Clinton. As Clinton tried to reassure Americans that there would be no computer issues once the clocks changed from 1999 to 2000,Y2Kfollows a group of teenagers who throw a massive party on December 31st, 1999. Although the characters attempt to have fun, they can’t help but feel scared of what could be next.

In the tradition ofThis Is The Endand the horror comedyBodies Bodies Bodiesstarring Pete Davidson,Y2Ksees the main characters in a hilarious and chaotic place. Single-location horror movies can be terrifying, but when a horror comedy is also mostly set in one place, that can also be effective. The characters have to rely on one another and their wisdom and perception if they want to get out alive. But since they’re partying, that becomes a bit difficult.

As the story continues, the characters realize thattechnology is in fact messing up. Instead of being chased by a killer and fighting for their lives, they have to figure out how to deal with these scary devices that seem to have minds of their own. It’s a fun and original idea for a movie and, from the trailer alone, it’s clear that the cast gave great performances.Christmas may be an entertaining horror movie setting, but New Year’s Eve is also a fun holiday to explore. Since December 31st, 1999 wasn’t just any old New Year’s Eve, however, this is a smart idea for a movie, and there is more drama and tension than usual.

As Mooney shared in an interview withIndieWire, people thought that the last night of 1999 would spell disaster, but of course, that didn’t end up being the case. He said:

“When anybody brings it up, the first thing you say is how disappointing it was and how much of a letdown you thought it was. We thought it was going to be this massive thing and it wasn’t.”
