Dark Sectorchronicles the story of CIA agent Hayden Tenno in his fight for survival in a post-Cold War world where a biological weapon, known as the Technocyte virus, is quickly taking over. On their journey, players can use various weapons alongside Tenno’s supernatural Glaide, which is itself the result of a Technocyte infection, to defeat various enemies. Despite coming out to a divisive reception at launch, Digital Extremes’s sci-fi action game holds a special place in the studio’s history, with certain elements in the game eventually carrying over toWarframe. Fortunately forWarframefans,Dark Sectoris the newest Steam game to go free for a limited time, which gives them a great chance to experience the themes that influenced the free-to-play live-service game.
Digital Extremes has announced thatDark Sectoris available to claim for free on Steam, starting from November 27, 12PM ET, till November 30, 12PM ET. This move comes as a way to celebrate the arrival of the nextWarframeupdate, titledWarframe: 1999, coming in December 2024 to PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, andiOS players.Dark Sector, which otherwise has a price tag of USD 9.99, boasts a “Very Positive” overall rating based on a pool of 839 user reviews on Steam at the time of writing.
WithDark Sectorbecoming available for free for some time, players can explore the early form of certain ideas Digital Extremes borrowed from the game for buildingWarframe’s world. Moreover, the European city featured in theWarframe: 1999update also takes a note or two fromDark Sector’s Eastern Bloc nation of Lasria. Besides a unique setting and a retro Y2K-esque theme, the update coming next month is also set to progress the story further and bring a bunch of new additions to the game, including the CYTE-09 marksman warframe, the Atomicycle sports bike, Gemini Skins pack, a new 90s arcade-style minigame, among other things.
